KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) –The Kalamazoo County Treasurer’s office is alerting residents of fraudulent currency circulating in the community.

The issue was discovered when an individual went to pay the Kalamazoo County Court with a counterfeit $20 bill.

The Secret Service’s “Know Your Money” is a downloadable PDF, which points out important characteristics in authenticating currency.

has a “Know Your Money” checklist to help residents determine if the money is real including looking for watermarks, color-shifting ink, special serial numbers, microprinting and other tips.

Kalamazoo Treasurer Mary Balkema warns businesses and individuals to be careful when handling bills bigger than $10, and contact your local police department whenever suspicious.
