London: Amid the rising interest in recognizing the contributions of the people from the Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities, UK is considering minting a coin to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi. In a letter to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee (RMAC), British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak asked the Committee to pursue recognition of individuals from those communities.
“RMAC is currently considering a coin to commemorate Gandhi”, the Treasury said.
However, Rishi Sunak’s office on Sunday confirmed that Mahatma Gandhi’s image on the coins is being consired to celebrate the efforts of non-white individuals like Indian-origin British spy Noor Inayat Khan and Jamaican British nurse Mary Seacole.

Sunak has written to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee that recommends themes and designs of coins, supporting a campaign called ‘We Too Built Britain’, which seeks representation of non-white icons on British currency.
The idea of having Gandhi in UK currency was also previously announced in October in 2019 by former chancellor Sajid Javid.
