Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams and Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey are the two biggest names on the NFL trade market, and just so happen to be available at a time the San Francisco 49ers are down their starting left tackle and one of their starting cornerbacks.

Joe Staley suffered a broken fibula against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and Ahkello Witherspoon suffered a foot injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3 that will sideline him for a month.

In turn, many fans have connected the dots between the 49ers — who are suddenly relevant again at 3-0 — and Williams and Ramsey.

49ers general manager John Lynch was asked specifically about trading for Williams or Ramsey during an appearance on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” podcast Friday morning.

“I think you look at those opportunities — there are some unique ones now — I think sometimes though we are always assuming that people are available, (but) that’s not always the case,” he said. “Just because they’re out there and not playing with their current team doesn’t mean they’re always available.”

Ramsey requested a trade from the Jaguars after Week 2, but has yet to be moved. He said Thursday his trade request still stands. While Ramsey has played in three games for Jacksonville this season, Williams has been holding out from Washington since training camp.

The asking price for Williams or Ramsey would likely involve at least one first-round pick, a tough pill to swallow for the 49ers, who are already down their second-round pick in 2020 due to the Dee Ford trade.

“We look into these things, we often make calls on these things,” Lynch said of trade conversations. “We obviously came in here with a plan of having success but having it be sustained success, so is this going to hamstring our operation moving forward? We look at all these things.”

Earlier in his KNBR appearance, Lynch expressed confidence in Staley’s replacement Justin Skule as well as the trio of reserve cornerbacks Jason Verrett, DJ Reed and Emmanuel Moseley. Despite this confidence, Lynch said the team feels the urgency to win now thanks to a 3-0 start.

“Believe me, we sense this team has something special to them, ” he said. “It’s very early in the year but anything we can do to improve we’re going to be aggressive and try to do so, so long as it’s not mortgaging the future and just going to give us short term success and hurt us in the future.”
