MADISON, Wis. — A Madison man was sentenced Thursday to three years in federal prison for conspiring with others to pass counterfeit U.S. currency at numerous merchants in Wisconsin early last year.

According to a release from the Department of Justice, Cornelius Stewart, 25, pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in December 2019.

The release said Stewart also received a 12-month sentence based upon the revocation of his federal supervision for a prior conviction for passing counterfeit money.

Officials said Stewart was on federal supervision from March through May 2019.

He passed counterfeit $100 bill at nearly 80 restaurants and merchants from Hudson to Beaver Dam with four associates, who would make small-dollar purchases and get a lot of change in legitimate currency when paying with the $100.
