The Dallas Mavericks are making moves.

The team executed two trades Friday afternoon — with the biggest one sending Golden State Warriors center Willie Cauley-Stein to Dallas. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski was first to report the trade. The Dallas Morning News’ Brad Townsend reports Dallas is sending Golden State a 2020 second-round pick (via Utah) for the center.

Dallas’ first trade of the day sent Isaiah Roby, the 45th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, to the Oklahoma City Thunder for 6-11 center Justin Patton, the 16th overall pick in the 2017 draft. The trade was first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Townsend reported that Patton will be waived to clear up a roster spot, which presumably will be Cauley-Stein. The Patton deal also frees up some cash for Dallas, Townsend reports. According to spotrac.com, the 2020-21 and 2021-22 years of Patton’s contract are non-guaranteed.

The two deals come shortly after the Mavs lost Dwight Powell for the season due to a ruptured right Achilles in Tuesday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Townsend gives his assessment of the acquisition of Cauley-Stein below.

Cauley-Stein was part of the same 2015 draft class that included current Mavericks forward Kristaps Porzingis and guard Delon Wright. The Knicks took Porzingis at No. 4 overall and Cauley-Stein went to the Kings two picks later at No. 6. Wright was taken No. 20 overall by the Raptors.

In his four-plus NBA seasons, Cauley-Stein has appeared in 336 games averaging 9.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. In his last season and a half, he has started 118 of a possible 122 games averaging 10.6 points per game and 7.6 rebounds.

Golden State Warriors center Willie Cauley-Stein waits to enter the game in the second half during an NBA basketball game against the Utah Jazz Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, in Salt Lake City.
