NBA trade deadline day updates: D’Angelo Russell to Wolves; Clippers acquire Marcus Morris from Knicks – CBSSports.com

Trading News

That’s it, the 3 p.m. ET deadline has arrived, and after a hectic final few hours, there will be no more trades in the NBA this season. Any teams that are still hoping to improve their rosters before the playoffs will have to wait for the buyout market to begin, when veterans may hit the free agent market.

In the biggest move of the day, the Warriors sent D’Angelo Russell to the Timberwolves in a deal involving Andrew Wiggins, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Also happening before the deadline, the Grizzlies, Heat and Timberwolves reportedly reached a trade involving Andre Iguodala, Justise Winslow and Jae Crowder, while the Cleveland Cavaliers arrived out of nowhere to acquire Andre Drummond from the Pistons, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Furthermore, the Clippers, Knicks and Wizards swung a three-team trade of their own which will send Marcus Morris and Isaiah Thomas to Los Angeles.

The Philadelphia 76ers also made some noise by reportedly adding Alec Burks and Glenn Robinson III from the Warriors in exchange for three second round picks. The move will give Philadelphia a much-needed scoring boost off of the bench. The Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks and Denver Nuggets announced their blockbuster 12-player trade involving Robert Covington and Clint Capela on Wednesday night.

Here’s a recap of the major deals that went through.

We’re getting to the part of the day where trade calls are being finalized and deals are being announced by teams

The Cavaliers are not going to buy out Tristan Thompson’s contract, according to the Athletic’s David Aldridge. Contenders seeking a potentially high-impact, low-price big man — Celtics, Rockets — will have to look elsewhere. Thompson will enter free agency this summer.

According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the Los Angeles Lakers are going to give guard JR Smith an audition. In addition, Darren Collison is expected to sign with the team if he chooses to make an NBA comeback.

The Miami Heat won’t be getting a deal done for Danilo Gallinari before the trade deadline.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowki, Isaiah Thomas is back in Los Angeles — but on a different team this time around. Thomas is reportedly joining the Clippers in the deal they made for Marcus Morris. That trade includes Jerome Robinson to the Wizards, with Moe Harkless and a 2020 first-round pick going to the Knicks, according to Wojnarowski. Thomas played for the Lakers in 2017-18.

The Bulls won’t be joining the trade-deadline action, according to NBC Sports’ K.C. Johnson. Johnson reported Chicago has “no trade calls lined up” with 3 p.m. minutes away.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Pistons will also receive a future second round pick in the Andre Drummond deal. Still, it looks like a salary dump for the Pistons. Drummond does have a player option this summer.

James Johnson’s tenure in Memphis will be a short one. The veteran forward is being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for center Gorgui Dieng.

Are the Celtics getting ready to make a trade?

The Washington Wizards have maintained that they would attempt to re-sign Davis Bertans this summer rather than trade him at the deadline. According to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, Washington is demanding two first-round picks in any potential deal for the sharpshooting big man.

The Suns have reportedly received offers for Kelly Oubre Jr. from the Orlando Magic and other teams but, at this time, have not found a deal that they think is worth trading the forward for.

The Knicks haven’t “closed the door” on acquiring Warriors guard D’Angelo Russell ahead of the trade deadline, according to SNY’s Ian Begley. Begley reported the Knicks have involved Bobby Portis and Frank Ntilikina in talks for Russell. However, New York wants to save assets for the possibility of acquiring a disgruntled star after the deadline, according to Begley.
